How to Change a Plastic Tank?
Changing the plastic tank of an aluminum core radiator using opening and closing pliers involves a careful process to ensure a proper and secure replacement. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to do it
What You will Need:
Opening and closing Radiators Pliers
Opening and closing Radiators Pliers
Rubber gasket or seal
Step-by-Step Process:
Drain Coolant:
Ensure the engine is cool before starting
Drain the coolant from the radiator into a suitable container
Detach Hoses and Components:
Carefully detach any hoses, clamps, and components connected to the radiator. Be cautious to avoid damaging delicate parts.
Remove the Damaged Tank:
Use the opening pliers (Decrimper) to gently pry open the tabs securing the plastic tank to the aluminum core. Be sure to use opening pliers and to press in the direction towards you so as not to disfigure the aluminum base. Then go around the entire tank to gradually release the tabs.
Clean the Core:
Once the tank is removed, clean the exposed aluminum core. Remove any remaining adhesive, debris, or old gasket material.
Prepare the New Tank:
If needed, attach a rubber gasket or seal to the replacement plastic tank. Ensure it’s positioned properly and securely. You can buy the gasket  HERE!
Attach the New Tank:
Carefully position the new plastic tank over the core, aligning it with the tabs and clips on the core.
Use the closing pliers (Crimper) to apply even pressure on the tabs or clips, gradually closing them over the plastic tank. Work around the entire tank until all tabs are securely clos.
Reattach Hoses and Components:
Reattach any hoses and components that were disconnected earlier. Make sure they’re properly secured with appropriate clamps.
Refill with Coolant:
Refill the radiator with the appropriate coolant mixture according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Pressure Test:
After refilling, conduct a pressure test to ensure there are no leaks around the new tank and connections.
Check for Leaks:
Start the engine and monitor for any signs of leaks. Check around the tank, hoses, and connections.
Final Check:
Allow the engine to reach operating temperature and recheck for leaks. Confirm that the cooling system is functioning properly.
